Within this shot the character of Harry Lime is represented as someone who is dark and mysterious but also has a good side to him. This is from the use of the chiaroscuro lighting, the darkness shows how Harry's life is full of crime and bad but also shows how he has a positive side to him. This is a common convention of thriller films as is the use of the chiaroscuro lighting, especially within the Noir thriller; it creates a spotlight effect that then gives the audience a feel of illusion or nightmare. Throughout the film the harsh lighting gives connotations of cruelty and gives whoever is in it a 'deer in the headlights' look, therefore creating the feeling of fear and worry.
