Preliminary Evaluation

Planning

When planning for the preliminary task the pitch we were given was that somebody had to walk into a room, there had to be a conversation and a dramatic moment. The genre was thriller meaning that we had to make the audience on edge. The concept that we chose was that we were going to have 2 people have the same exam and both need the same revision book, they will find the book but it will be the only one there, this will lead to an argument and a person to storm out leaving the other with the book.

Filming

When filming we used shots such as the over the shoulder shot. I chose to use this kind of shot to establish the position of each of the actors in their setting. It is also commonly used when 2 characters are having a discussion like the two in ours. It also gives realism to the shot as the audience are placed at a characters point of view.

The use of mid shots in the film was mostly to show the distance between two of the characters and so therefore showing their relationship. When considering this in our film our mid shot shown on the left shows how the characters must be comfortable with each other, however there is a small amount of distance between them.

When considering the use of long shots in our films we mostly used them to establish the setting and loneliness of one of the characters. Due to the setting being somewhat desolate and urban it creates mystery to what this character is doing in this setting, and what they're about to do.

The use of the extreme close up on the shoe was mostly to again create tension and make the audience wonder where this character was going. It was also used to make the audience focus just on what was going on to this character and what they were doing.

The use simply of the close up was to show the characters expression towards what was happening and their response to what was happening in the scene.

Editing

When editing my film I chose to use a time code a the bottom for some of the shots that involved just one of the characters walking with a black and white filter to make it seem as though it were a CCTV camera, by doing this it created tension and mystery as it showed that the characters were being watched. I also used a fade between 2 clips as this showed time was passing, this meant the audience would feel more involved. I chose to use slow-mo on the clip of Chloe walking up the stairs as it showed how she was making a gradual approach and again created tension.

  1. A helpful evaluation where you proficiently explain the purpose of specific aspects of planning, particularly camera angles and movement.

Your evaluation is well organised and includes excellent screen shots but a conclusion with an overall evaluation of the experience and areas to improve on would have strengthened.

  2. Lack of any planning on your blog for your prelim task has decreased your mark!
